All the Broken-hearted People, the first painting only exhibition of works by Alonso Galue
Galue’s portraits explore the presentation of the human form and its fascinating aesthetic . His energetic and quick impressions of color interact and vibrate in the eye of the observer. The floating figures seem to move as you approach, becoming more abstract and dilute. This effect reminds us of the abstract paintings of the 20th Century.
Titled after The Beatles’ song “Let it be”, traditionally associated with hope, unites ideas of human suffering and finding the solution to our relationships; so do the paintings in this show; Portraying images from palpable realities while reaching towards their sublime dimensions.
As a result of our times, Galue’s work speaks to the intensity of being alive today. His work exists as a continuation of a long lineage of painters reckoning with figurative painters like Rembrandt, Lucian Freud, and Frank Auerbach. Flesh, materiality are both the hallmarks in this style of painting.
In the past, Alonso has presented human figures disappearing, broken, decaying, ephemeral; making them closer to us. In these expanding canvases the fleshy forms confront us with all that we missed looking at the mirror.
